Sharks 2021-22 Game 32 Recap: Sharks 3, Flyers 2 (OT) (12/30/21)

The Sharks get their first win in the Stealth jerseys this season as they take down the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in overtime in their last game of the calendar year. It was also Martin Jones' return to SAP Center since joining the Flyers this past offseason.

San Jose didn't get the start it wanted, as the Flyers scored the first goal of the game via Morgan Frost late in the first period. However, the Sharks made up for it, scoring the next two in the second period from Logan Couture on the breakaway shorthanded and Brent Burns with a wicked wrister. The Flyers answered back late in the third on one from Joel Farabee to force overtime. Tomas Hertl pokes one past Felix Sandstrom to give Team Teal the extra point in overtime.

Andrew Cogliano, Jake Middleton, Tomas Hertl, Erik Karlsson, and Noah Gregor each recorded assists in the Sharks' second-straight win. The Sharks also generated 46 shots on goal against the Flyers.

Before the game, Mario Ferraro was placed in COVID protocol, while Jonathan Dahlen left COVID protocol and rejoined the Sharks.

James Reimer had another decent start, recording 23 saves and continuing to fly under the radar among goalies across the NHL in terms of his overall performance this season.

It feels great for the Sharks to close out the calendar year with a win and finally break the curse of the Stealth jerseys. San Jose kicks off the 2022 calendar year with a four-game road trip beginning on Sunday in Pittsburgh against the Penguins at 10 am PT.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 31 Recap: Sharks 8, Coyotes 7 (SO) (12/28/21)

The Sharks and Coyotes slug it out in a high-scoring thriller, and the Sharks come out of this one in the shootout 8-7 in what was easily the highest-scoring game in the NHL this season.

It was an ugly win with poor puck management from both teams, but I’m incredibly thankful that San Jose won because it would’ve been downright embarrassing if they lost in any way, shape, or form to the worst team in the league this season.

There’s a lot to cover in this one, so let’s begin: The first few minutes of this game featured Jonah Gadjovich and Jan Jenik dropping the gloves. Moments after the tilt, the Sharks scored the first of several goals in this contest, which first appeared to be scored by Logan Couture but was given to Alexander Barabanov after Barabanov tipped it into the net. Timo Meier was credited with the secondary assist on the first goal. The Coyotes tied it a few minutes later from Lawson Crouse. The Sharks regained their lead on Nick Bonino's fifth goal of the season from Matt Nieto and Andrew Cogliano. Before the end of the first period, the Coyotes re-tied the game on Janis Moser's first NHL goal.

The madness continued in the second period with the Sharks going ahead 3-2 on Radim Simek's first goal of the season. Jayden Halbgewachs recorded his first NHL point on the Simek goal, and Marc-Eduoard Vlasic recorded the secondary assist. The Sharks went ahead by two seven seconds later on Jeff Viel's first NHL goal, with assists from Jonah Gadjovich and Lane Pederson. This ties a Sharks franchise record for shortest time span between two goals. Arizona gets one back a few minutes later via Clayton Keller. It wasn't long before Timo Meier added to the scoresheet by batting one out of midair for his 13th goal of the season. The Coyotes get back within one on Janis Moser's second goal of the game and second NHL goal moments before the end of the second period.

The third period was just as wild as the first two, if not more wild. Tomas Hertl returned from COVID protocol before this game and scored his 15th goal of the season to start the third period, getting an assist from Noah Gregor. The Coyotes continue to keep pace with the Sharks, with Lawson Crouse scoring his second goal of the game to make it 6-5 Sharks. Logan Couture gets the Sharks' two-goal lead back with his tenth goal of the season from Alexander Barabanov and Erik Karlsson. Late in the third period, the Coyotes proceeded to score two goals from Shayne Gostisbehere and Andrew Ladd to tie the game at seven and force overtime and eventually a shootout. Two successful attempts from Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl in the shootout ensured the Sharks' victory over the Coyotes.

This game also marked Brent Burns' 1200th NHL game, becoming the 36th defenseman in NHL history to reach that plateau.

In a nutshell, defense and goaltending were optional from both teams in this crazy game. James Reimer and the Sharks defense shouldn't have allowed seven goals to the Coyotes, but I understand the Sharks may have been rusty from having the past week off, and these aspects sure made this game quite entertaining. In other words, this Sharks-Coyotes contest was on steroids, and very few, if any, expected these teams to score a combined 15 goals.

The Sharks' next game is Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers at 7:30 pm PT, as the Flyers make a visit to SAP Center as part of their California road trip.

Sharks News & Notes (12/27/21)

More updates have been released ahead of the NHL's return from its Christmas break tomorrow. Here they are:

Brent Burns has exited COVID protocol, while Adin Hill has joined Tomas Hertl and Jonathan Dahlen in COVID protocol. Jasper Weatherby is currently in AHL COVID protocol. In addition, Zach Sawchenko has been recalled from the Barracuda.

The NHL has reintroduced taxi squads in light of rising cases across the league due to the Omicron variant. Taxi squads consist of roughly five or six players who are readily available if a team is shorthanded due to positive cases on the team. This should help reduce the number of future games that have to be postponed due to pandemic-related reasons.

William Eklund is the only Sharks prospect participating in the World Juniors this year. He has recorded two assists in the tournament so far in Sweden's 6-3 victory over Russia last night.

The Sharks announced the passing of former head coach Jim Wiley at the age of 71. He previously coached the Sharks during the 1995-96 season.

NHL Delays Resumption of 2021-22 Season by One Day

The NHL announced that they will postpone all games scheduled for Monday, December 27 and resume league play the following day. This is to ensure that teams are ready to play once they return to regular team activities after the extended Christmas break and to give the league enough time to analyze COVID test results across the league.

As for the Sharks, their next game in Anaheim against the Ducks on Monday has officially been postponed and will be rescheduled to a later date. San Jose's next game is now Tuesday against the Arizona Coyotes at the Tank.

What makes matters worse is that I had plans to attend Monday's Sharks game in Anaheim and already secured tickets to that game before it was ultimately postponed. I have no idea what will happen next with that particular game or when it will be rescheduled. As a result, I don't know if I will be able to attend that game when it gets rescheduled because school and/or work may get in the way. In addition, if school and/or work get in the way of me attending the Sharks-Ducks game at Honda Center, I should be able to get either a refund for the tickets I purchased and/or be able to get replacement tickets for a different game, but I don't know for sure until the Ducks make an announcement and we know for sure when this game will be rescheduled. On a more positive note, if I can still attend this game, the NHL should be in a better state with the pandemic when it gets rescheduled, which will probably be sometime in February. We'll have to wait and see, keep our fingers crossed, and stay optimistic.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Sharks News & Notes (12/22/21)

Here are the latest headlines affecting the Sharks despite not playing any games this week:

  • Brent Burns, Jonathan Dahlen, and Tomas Hertl have been recetly placed in COVID protocol. Hopefully they can return to the team in time before their next game in Anaheim on Monday, especially so I can see them play in person. However, there are no guarantees on this, and I also hope this doesn’t spiral into something worse for the Sharks.
  • In the meantime, Jasper Weatherby and Jayden Halbgewachs were sent down to the Barracuda in the AHL on conditioning assignments so they can get more playing time to further their development.
  • The NHL officially begins its Christmas break today, as it has paused the season and league operations through the Christmas weekend due to multiple teams struggling with multiple positive cases among players, coaches, and team personnel. In addition, this move was also made to ensure there is a competitive balance throughout the entire NHL.
  • It should come as no surprise at this point that the NHL has opted out of participating in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing. It isn't worth all of the hassle when many teams are currently struggling to contain COVID outbreaks and the Beijing Winter Olympics' extended quarantine if a player tests positive will prevent players from returning to regular team activities in a timely fashion. Like I have mentioned previously, the few-week period that was initially set aside for players to participate in the Olympics should be used to make up all of the games that have been postponed this season due to the pandemic, and that's what the league plans on doing.

NHL Postpones Sharks’ Next Two Games Due to COVID-19

The NHL has announced drastic new measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, as multiple teams have had to postpone their games due to outbreaks among several players on those teams.

The biggest change announced was that the league has postponed all cross-border games through the Christmas break. This directly affects the Sharks as they were initially set to host the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday and the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday before the Christmas break. Make-up dates for these games have yet to be determined.

The Sharks’ next game is now scheduled for December 27 against the Ducks in Anaheim. As of now, the recap post for that game will be different from every other game recap I write, as I plan to attend that game.

In addition it is now very unlikely that the NHL will participate in the Winter Olympics in Beijing. This is especially considering that participants are subject to a three-to-five-week quarantine if they test positive for COVID at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The landscape of the pandemic is rapidly changing due to the emergence of the highly contagious omicron variant. Some teams have had issues with COVID earlier in the season, but it has never been as bad as it has been recently. I’m really hoping that things don’t get any worse to where the league has to shut down entirely for an extended period of time. That would be a huge slap to the face for the fans and everyone involved in the NHL. I have my fingers crossed and truly believe that it won’t get to that point, but we never know until further developments occur.

As for the games around the league that have had to be postponed due to the pandemic, the NHL should forget about participating in the Olympics this coming year. It needs to use the few weeks in February that were originally mandated to be the Olympic break to make up these postponed games without extending the season any further than necessary.

I plan to keep close tabs on any further developments from the NHL regarding their COVID situation. The NFL and NBA have had COVID issues of their own and both plan to play through them without any significant disruptions. There is no reason why the NHL can’t do the same. We’ll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, we must stay optimistic. At least the NHL is still continuing the 2021-22 season as it should.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 30 Recap: Canucks 5, Sharks 2 (12/16/21)

The Sharks’ inconsistencies continue as they lose to the Vancouver Canucks 5-2. The Canucks have now extended their win streak to six games.

Despite the loss, the Sharks had some aspects of their game that went well for them. But first, the Canucks scored the first two goals of the game in the first period via Brock Boeser and Bo Horvat. Late in the first, Timo Meier put the Sharks on the board with his 12th goal of the season and the 100th goal of his NHL career, with Erik Karlsson and Tomas Hertl assisting on the play. The second period saw Brock Boeser score his second goal of the game to give the Canucks a two-goal lead through two periods.

The Sharks got another one back in the third period on Andrew Cogliano's third goal of the year. Also, Lane Pederson registered his first point with the Sharks with an assist on the play, while  recorded the secondary assist. It was only a matter of time before the Canucks sealed the deal with one from J.T. Miller and an empty-netter from Jason Dickinson.

Jayden Halbgewachs made his NHL debut against the Canucks Thursday night and had a great breakaway chance in the second period that was stopped by Thatcher Demko.

Adin Hill wasn't his best in net, making 25 saves and giving up four goals, a few of those goals being soft ones. The Sharks' offense showed more effort in this game, but Thatcher Demko stood in the way for the most part.

In addition, Kevin Labanc recently had surgery done to repair a dislocated shoulder and will be out for two to three months.

The Sharks still can't seem to win in their Stealth jerseys this season, and they're beginning to lose ground in the standings. They need to play with more desperation and have more of the will and desire to win. In addition, it isn't entirely the Sharks' fault as some of their key forwards are dealing with injuries right now. San Jose faces these same Canucks again in its next game on Tuesday at 7:30 pm PT, in which the Sharks need to win and get revenge or it won't look good at all.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 29 Recap: Kraken 3, Sharks 1 (12/14/21)

The Sharks lose their first-ever match-up with the Seattle Kraken 3-1.

The game was scoreless for the first two periods, and it was much closer than what the score indicated. The first period had 14 minutes of non-stop action without any whistles. As for the second period, the Sharks had some great scoring chances but couldn't get one past Chris Driedger. In fact, defenseman Adam Larsson made an incredible save on one shot during the second period.

The scoring began early in the third, with the first goal scored by former Shark Ryan Donato. Roughly eight minutes later, the Kraken followed the first one up with another one, this time by Brandon Tanev. With about two minutes remaining, Logan Couture put it in the wide open net to avoid getting shut out, getting assists from Brent Burns and Tomas Hertl. San Jose had a comeback effort in them late in the third, but it was thwarted after Calle Jarnkrok buries it in the empty net with seconds remaining.

James Reimer was given the start in net, recording 27 saves on 29 shots against. He had a decent performance, but a lack of offense couldn't bail him out.

In other news, Joel Kellman was recently placed on waivers for the purpose of contract buyout. He has mainly been stuck with the Barracuda but hasn't developed in the way the Sharks had hoped he would.

Overall, I liked what I saw in the first two periods of this game but wasn't happy with the final result. This is especially considering that the Sharks faced an expansion team who has been mediocre in its first season so far. Team Teal is looking to turn things around when they face the Vancouver Canucks in its next game on Thursday at 7:30 pm PT. This will be no easy task as the Canucks have won their last five games under new head coach Bruce Boudreau.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 28 Recap: Sharks 2, Stars 1 (12/11/21)

The Sharks bounce back from their previous game on Thursday as they defeat the Dallas Stars 2-1.

I would first like to begin that it was Military Appreciation Night and Joe Pavelski's return to the Tank this season. It also marked Brent Burns' 625th consecutive game played, setting a Sharks franchise record.

San Jose scored the first goal of the game in the first period, which went to Tomas Hertl after he deflected the initial shot from Timo Meier. Aleander Barabanov was the first to set up the first goal and was credited with the secondary assist on that goal. The Sharks extended their lead to two late in the second period via Erik Karlsson's eighth goal of the season, which was another absolute bomb of a shot. Assisting on the second goal of the game were Timo Meier and Alexander Barabanov. The final frame saw the Stars avoid getting shut out with a goal from Michael Raffl.

James Reimer made his return to the crease after missing the past handful of games due to a lower body injury. He was excellent against the Stars, making 34 saves on 35 shots.

This was another great win by the Sharks, highlighted by James Reimer returning to form and Erik Karlsson playing his best hockey since joining Team Teal. San Jose is looking to get another win streak together as they face the Seattle Kraken for the first time ever in their next game on Tuesday at 7:30 pm PT.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 27 Recap: Wild 5, Sharks 2 (12/9/21)

The Sharks made a late push in the third period but were  still trailing the entire game as they go down to the Minnesota Wild 5-2.

The Wild took control of this game early on and for most of the game. San Jose gave up the first goal early on in the first to Kevin Fiala. Minnesota added on to their lead in the second period with goals from Joel Eriksson Ek and Jordan Greenway to make it 3-0 through two periods.

The Sharks began their comeback in the third period, starting with a deflection from Jonathan Dahlen off the initial shot from Erik Karlsson. This was Dahlen's eighth goal of the season, which is second in the NHL in goals among rookies, only trailing the Red Wings' Lucas Raymond, who has ten on the season. San Jose got within one via Tomas Hertl on the power play, who grabbed the rebound off the shot from Jonathan Dahlen. Hertl also assisted on the Sharks' first goal of the game by Dahlen, while Logan Couture recorded the secondary assist on the Hertl goal. Speaking of Logan Couture, he recently hit the 600-point mark in his career. The Sharks' late push in the third was ultimately thwarted after the Wild sealed the deal with two empty-netters from Jordan Greenway and Kirill Kaprizov for Minnesota's eighth-straight win.

Adin Hill wasn't bad in net, stopping 22 of 25 shots against. James Reimer was the backup to Hill in the loss to Minnesota, indicating that Reimer will be able to start in net again very soon.

The Sharks should have played desperately the entire game, not just in the third period. They also can't seem to win in their Stealth jerseys, which I hope changes sooner rather than later. Team Teal is looking to get back into the win column in their next game against the Dallas Stars on Saturday at 7:30 pm PT.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 26 Recap: Sharks 5, Flames 3 (12/7/21)

The Sharks’ offense came aplenty as they defeat the Calgary Flames 5-3 to get back in the win column.

A few players had big performances in the win over the Flames, and the Sharks came back in the later half of this game to secure the win. The Flames scored first early in the first period, which was tipped in by Dillon Dube. The Sharks answered back minutes later via Tomas Hertl on the power play for his first goal of the game, in which Hertl puts it in off the rebound from Alexander Barabanov's initial shot. Brent Burns also assisted on the Sharks' game-tying goal in the first. Roughly three minutes later, Johnny Gaudreau puts the Flames back on top 2-1.

Early in the second period, the Flames extended their lead to two on Adam Ruzicka's first NHL goal. Beginning in the later half of the middle frame, the Sharks scored four straight goals to come from behind and secure another statement win, which began with Erik Karlsson's seventh of the season from Logan Couture and Jasper Weatherby to get the Sharks back within one near the halfway point of the middle frame. This was followed by Logan Couture's game-tying goal late in the second deflecting the initial shot from Erik Karlsson on the power play and Tomas Hertl scoring his second goal of the game from Alexander Barabanov. Jonathan Dahlen also recorded an assist on the Karlsson goal. Tomas Hertl put the cherry on top of this game with an empty-netter late in the third for the hat trick, getting helpers from Logan Couture and Brent Burns.

I should mention that late in the second period after the Sharks grabbed their first lead of the night, Milan Lucic laid a dangerous hit on Lane Pederson near the benches, which briefly sent Pederson to the dressing room. What made matters worse was that the refs didn't call a boarding penalty on Lucic, but luckily Pederson was able to return to the bench. Although this incident doesn't matter as much since the Sharks came out victorious, this was a cheap shot that Lucic shouldn't have gotten away with.

Adin Hill made his fourth consecutive start in net and bounced back from his previous start in Columbus, recording 40 saves and the win. Kevin Labanc and Radim Simek were notable scratches against the Flames last night, as both players haven't been performing that well lately.

In other news, the Sharks recently signed Brandon Coe to a standard entry-level contract. Coe has recorded 14 goals and 32 assists for 46 points in 24 games so far with the North Bay Battalion in the OHL and is currently leading all major junior players in assists and points this season.

This has been a great start to the Sharks' season-long seven-game homestand. Team Teal is looking to carry their current momentum into its next game against the Minnesota Wild at 7:30 pm PT.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 25 Recap: Blue Jackets 6, Sharks 4 (12/5/21)

The Sharks were very much in this game until the end as they fall to the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-4 to finish their current road trip with a 3-2 record.

The offense was there for San Jose in Columbus, but Team Teal was outpaced and outscored by the Blue Jackets. The scoring began late in the first period by Adam Boqvist, who puts the Jackets on the board first. The Sharks were able to tie the game before the end of the first period on Nick Bonino's fourth goal of the season from Matt Nieto and Andrew Cogliano. Speaking of Cogliano, he returns to the lineup after missing the past few games to tend to a personal matter.

The second period starts off with a bang as Erik Karlsson launches a rocket from the point for the Sharks' first lead of the game, with Alexander Barabanov assisting on the play. Columbus answered back with one from Sean Kuraly to tie it at two. The Sharks regained their lead in the later half of the second period on a bomb from Brent Burns, with assists from Matt Nieto and Timo Meier.

Team Teal began to lose ground towards the end of the second period after the Blue Jackets scored three unanswered goals from Cole Sillinger late in the second, and Jack Roslovic and Adam Boqvist early in the third. The Sharks got one back at around the halfway point of the final frame via Tomas Hertl, but it wasn't enough as the Jackets put this one away with about two minutes remaining via an empty-netter from Alexandre Texier.

Adin Hill was given his third consecutive start in net as James Reimer isn't yet 100 percent ready to go. Hill showed signs of exhaustion against the Jackets, recording 24 saves and giving up five goals in the losing effort.

It wasn't the way the road trip should have ended, but the Sharks still had a solid road trip, having won the first three and stood their ground in the last two for the most part. Team Teal returns home for seven games beginning Tuesday against the Calgary Flames at 7:30 pm PT.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 24 Recap: Rangers 1, Sharks 0 (12/3/21)

The Sharks snap their three-game win streak as they get shut out by the New York Rangers 1-0.

Ryan Strome scored the only goal of the game in the first period for the Rangers.

Adin Hill was the man factor keeping the Sharks in this game, but Team Teal couldn't muster up any offense. Hill made a total of 26 saves and continues to improve his game as the season progresses.

In addition, despite the Rangers getting the win, their goalie Igor Shesterkin got injured and will be out for some time.

I don't have much else to say about this game, other than the Sharks were on the second leg of a back-to-back and may have also been depleted from the previous game against the other New York team. It's never easy playing the second game of a back-to-back in most sports.

Hopefully the Sharks can continue to remain hot like they have for most of their current road trip, which concludes in Columbus against the Blue Jackets on Sunday at 3 pm PT.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 23 Recap: Sharks 2, Islanders 1 (OT) (12/2/21)

The Sharks extend their win streak to three games and remain undefeated on their current road trip as they take down the New York Islanders 2-1 in overtime. This also marks the Islanders' ninth-straight loss.

About a minute into the start of this game, Mat Barzal scores the first goal of the game and the only goal for the Islanders in this game. The Sharks tie it up about eight minutes later via Nick Bonino's third goal of the season from Jonathan Dahlen and Timo Meier.

Jonah Gadjovich had left the game early and didn't return after blocking a shot by Noah Dobson near the Sharks' blue line. Timo Meier was involved in a knee-on-knee collision at center ice in the first period and headed into the dressing room for a moment, but is okay and later returned to the game. The second period saw Jean-Gabriel Pageau crash into Adin Hill, which led to a Sharks power play. Luckily Adin Hill was unshaken by Pageau colliding into him.

The game remained tied at one until seconds into overtime when Timo Meier makes a pass to Erik Karlsson from behind the net. Karlsson was in the right place at the right time as he found a big hole on Ilya Sorokin and buried it in the net for the game-winner. In addition, Logan Couture got the secondary assist on the OT GWG for the Sharks. This game couldn't have ended any better.

Adin Hill was excellent in net as he recorded 24 saves on 25 shots in the victory tonight.

As for the standings, Team Teal is currently 13-9-1 with 27 points, good for the top Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. This is a great win, and I love what I am seeing from the Sharks lately. San Jose is looking to make it four straight wins tomorrow night when they face the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden on the second leg of a back-to-back at 4 pm PT.

Sharks 2021-22 Game 22 Recap: Sharks 5, Devils 2 (11/30/21)

The Sharks get their second win in a row and second win on their current road trip as they take down the New Jersey Devils 5-2.

Team Teal was basically in control of this game from the get-go. The Sharks scored four unanswered goals through the second period to begin this game, with each one from Noah Gregor, Jake Middleton, Timo Meier, and Erik Karlsson in this specific order. The Devils mounted a comeback effort in the third period with goals from Tomas Tatar and Jesper Bratt, but that was all they were able to generate. Timo Meier sealed the deal with an empty-net goal late in the third for his second-consecutive two-goal game.

As for other Sharks players to show up on the scoresheet, Alexander Barabanov recorded two assists, Noah Gregor recorded an assist in addition to the first goal of the game, and Radim Simek, Marc-Eduoard Vlasic, Logan Couture, and Rudolfs Balcers each recorded an assist.

James Reimer had another great start in net, stopping 32 of 34 shots against. Jonathan Dahlen returned to the lineup last night after being sidelined due to a shoulder injury. Another noteworthy storyline from this game was the return of Jack Hughes for the Devils, who also signed an 8-year extension.

San Jose is beginning to find their groove again and looking more like a playoff team. The Sharks' next stop in their current road trip is the new UBS Arena where they will face the struggling New York Islanders, who had their past two games postponed due to COVID, on Thursday at 4 pm PT.

A few side notes:

  • As many folks around the Sharks expected, Evander Kane has cleared waivers and reported to the Barracuda in the AHL yesterday morning.
  • Yesterday marked one year since I began CPF Hockey, and we are still going strong. It's only up from here!

Projecting the Sharks' 2024-25 Opening Night Roster

The Sharks are halfway through their preseason slate of games, and further cuts are being made to their training camp roster. As I am earin...
