Team Teal returns from the Olympics with a 4-1 loss to the Calgary Flames, dropping their fifth consecutive game.
The Sharks struck first early in the second period on a deflection by Tyler Toffoli for his 16th goal of the season, assisted by Mario Ferraro and Michael Misa. Later in the second period, Nazem Kadri scored to tie the game at one for the Flames. Calgary went ahead early in the third period on a goal by Connor Zary. Later in the third period, Nazem Kadri scored his second goal of the game to put the Flames up by two, which was primarily generated by a terrible Timothy Liljegren turnover. With two and a half minutes remaining, the Flames put this one and their season series with the Sharks away on an empty-netter by Mikael Backlund.
Yaroslav Askarov received the start in the Sharks’ first game back from the Olympic break, recording 25 saves on 28 shots against. In addition, Pavol Regenda, Adam Gaudette, and Shakir Mukhamadullin were listed as healthy scratches for tonight's game.
The Sharks scored the first goal of this contest, started things off well, and outshot the Flames 35-29. Both Macklin Celebrini and Kiefer Sherwood led the Sharks in shots with five each tonight. However, the Sharks were unable to solve Dustin Wolf for the most part, and costly turnovers allowed Calgary to pull away late in this one. While the Flames are behind the Sharks in the standings and likely will not be a playoff team this season, their goalie Dustin Wolf seemingly elevates his game and plays some of his best hockey against his hometown team. This is certainly frustrating and problematic for the Sharks, but hopefully they can begin to figure out Dustin Wolf as soon as next season. Next up, the Sharks host the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday at 1 pm PT, which also happens to be the next Sharks game that I will be in attendance for. Expect my personal experience post from the Sharks’ next game to arrive that night or the following morning after the game.
