Sharks Re-Sign Thomas Bordeleau

The Sharks’ last remaining restricted free agent from this offseason, forward Thomas Bordeleau, has been signed to a new one-year, two-way contract worth $874,125.

Bordeleau is a skilled young forward with high upside and star potential, especially on offense, that has yet to be fully realized at the NHL level. He will also be competing for a roster spot and more of a full-time role in the NHL with the Sharks heading into the 2024-25 season. During the 2023-24 season, Bordeleau scored six goals and five assists for 11 points in 27 games. He also finished fifth on the Sharks in power play goals with four and has 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 35 AHL games with the Barracuda last season.

Overall, I have always thought highly of Thomas Bordeleau, and I hope he gets more opportunities this coming season to elevate his game in the NHL if and when the opportunity arises.

Sharks Re-Sign Henry Thrun

The Sharks announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have re-signed RFA defenseman Henry Thrun to a two-year deal worth $2 million ($1 million AAV).

Thrun is a solid young defenseman with plenty of promise and potential to blossom into a star with the Sharks. This past season, Henry Thrun recorded three goals and eight assists for 11 points in 51 NHL games. He also ranked tenth among NHL rookie defensemen in points, sixth in average time on ice per game (20 minutes), and third in penalty kill time on ice (86:07). Thrun became one of three NHL rookie defensemen to log at least 25 minutes of ice time in a game four or more times. On top of that, Thrun was named the Sharks' Rookie of the Year for 2023-24.

Overall, it was just a matter of time before the Sharks signed Henry Thrun to a new contract, and I'm glad they worked out a new deal. He is expected to make the Sharks out of training camp heading into this coming season, and I hope he can take his game to the next level in 2024-25. With that now out the way, the only remaining RFA on the Sharks still needing a new contract heading into the 2024-25 season is Thomas Bordeleau. Stay tuned to CPF Hockey for more updates.

Sharks Re-Sign Brandon Coe

The Sharks announced a minor transaction today, re-signing forward Brandon Coe to a one-year, two-way contract.

Coe has yet to play a game in the NHL, but his time to shine in the big league could come next season if the right opportunity for him arises. This past season with the Barracuda, Coe recorded 12 goals and five assists for 17 points in 57 AHL games, setting career bests in goals and points. His first full AHL season occurred in 2022-23, registering five goals and 11 assists for 16 points in 56 games with the Barracuda. In total, Coe has 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points in 130 career AHL games.

Overall, it's good to get Brandon Coe under contract for next season, but I don't have any strong feelings about this latest transaction. As for other Sharks RFAs that still need new contracts heading into next season, there are two skaters remaining, specifically one forward and one defenseman in Thomas Bordeleau and Henry Thrun respectively. Hopefully both Bordeleau and Thrun get re-signed to new deals sooner than later. Watch this space for more updates.

Sharks Sign Sam Dickinson to ELC + Re-Sign Ty Emberson

The Sharks announced the signings of two defensemen this week.

First, the Sharks announced yesterday that they signed defenseman and 2024 11th overall pick Sam Dickinson to a standard, entry-level contract. He is seen as the Sharks' top blue line prospect and has the opportunity to make his NHL debut as soon as next season. Dickinson previously played with the London Knights of the OHL last season, recording 18 goals and 52 assists for 70 points in 68 games along with two goals and two assists for four points in four Memorial Cup games.

The most recent transaction announced by the Sharks as of this morning is the re-signing of defenseman Ty Emberson to a one-year deal worth $950k, avoiding arbitration. A solid depth blue-liner, Emberson appeared in 30 games during the 2023-24 season, registering one goal and nine assists for ten points, including a three-game assist streak in early January. In addition, he made his NHL debut and scored his first NHL point on two separate occasions in late October on top of scoring his first NHL goal in late November. However, Emberson's 2023-24 season was unfortunately cut short due to a lower-body injury suffered in late February.

Overall, it's great and necessary for the Sharks to get these two young defensemen under contract through at least next season. Hope Sam Dickinson lives up to the hype, which I'm pretty sure he will, and Ty Emberson bounces back, improves his game, and has a better season than last.

Sharks Sign Macklin Celebrini to Entry-Level Contract

It’s official: the Sharks’ 2024 first-overall pick Macklin Celebrini has signed his entry-level contract and will be playing in the NHL next season.

Celebrini needs little introduction. He is hailed as the next face of the franchise for the Sharks, dominating college hockey at Boston University last season in his freshman year as a 17-year old to win the Hobey Baker Award for top college hockey player. In addition, Celebrini performed exceptionally well during the Sharks development camp and prospect scrimmage earlier this week. He will more than likely begin next season as the Sharks’ second-line or third-line center and eventually work his way up to the top forward line.

On a side note, Sharks defenseman Ty Emberson is one of 14 restricted free agents in the NHL that have elected salary arbitration, in which arbitration hearings will occur in a few weeks to determine Emberson’s next salary.

Although there was some initial uncertainty surrounding where Macklin Celebrini would be playing next season, it was expected all along that he would sign his ELC this summer, and he made the right decision. I also feel that jumping from one year of college hockey straight to the NHL is best for the development of the Sharks’ future superstar, and Celebrini has nothing left to prove in the NCAA. I can totally see Macklin Celebrini and possibly Will Smith being the front-runners for the Calder Trophy next season, and Sharks hockey has instantly become a lot more exciting than it has been for the past five years. I couldn’t be more hyped and optimistic for the next several seasons of San Jose Sharks hockey, and this was the moment we’ve all been waiting for to cap off what has been an excellent offseason for Team Teal.

Sharks News & Notes (7/4/24)

Happy 4th of July! While free agency in the NHL has simmered down some since the beginning of the week and with the Sharks Prospect Scrimmage taking place today, the Sharks made a few more notable transactions in the past two days that are worth discussing here in this post. Let's begin:

The NHL released its schedule for all 32 teams for the 2024-25 regular season. While I plan to mention about it in bits and pieces as the season gets underway and progresses like I would normally, the most important date announced from the schedule release is for the Joe Thornton jersey retirement ceremony, set for November 23 when the Sharks host the Buffalo Sabres.

Ryan Warsofsky's coaching staff has been finalized for the 2024-25 season. Doug Houda and Jeff Ulmer have been added as first-time Sharks assistant coaches, while Brian Wiseman, Thomas Speer, Nick Gialdini, and Cody Ward were brought back as assistant coach, goaltending coach, video coach, and assistant video coach respectively.

Ryane Clowe is back with the Sharks, this time as their new assistant general manager. This team is coming full circle in putting together some of their former players from the late 2000s to create a positive winning culture and lead them back to being the perennial playoff contender that they were for several years past. Clowe previously played for the Sharks from 2005 to 2013 and was a fan favorite during those years, recording 101 goals, 170 assists, and 271 points along with 18 goals, 27 assists, and 45 points in 68 playoff games during his Sharks tenure as a forward. He was also previously an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils from 2016-2018, the head coach of the Newfoundland Growlers for a part of the 2018-19 season, and a senior advisor/hockey operations advisor for the New York Rangers for the past three seasons. It’s great to see another former great Sharks player rejoin the organization in a front office role.

San Jose made a third minor addition primarily for the Barracuda in the AHL, signing forward Andrew Poturalski to a two-year, two-way contract. Poturalski registered 15 goals, 36 assists, and 51 points in 60 AHL games with the Coachella Valley Firebirds last season.

The Sharks have agreed to terms with recently-acquired RFA forwards Carl Grundstrom and Ty Dellandrea to two-year deals. Dellandrea's new contract is worth $2.6 million ($1.3 million AAV), while Grundstrom's new contract is worth $3.6 million ($1.8 million AAV).

Lastly, I’m eagerly awaiting Macklin Celebrini’s official plans on where he will be playing next season, preferably him signing his ELC, and the biggest remaining offseason need for Team Teal is a right-shot, puck-moving defenseman. Stay tuned to CPF Hockey for more updates.

Sharks 2024 Free Agency Day 1 Recap

The Sharks have wrapped up their first day of free agency this year, and as expected, they have made some significant free agent additions to their roster. Let's dive into them:

The first new unrestricted free agent addition made by the Sharks this year is Tyler Toffoli, signing him to a four-year deal carrying an average annual value of $6 million and a full no-movement clause for the entire duration of the contract. Toffoli is a top-six scoring winger signed to help the Sharks build around their new core of Will Smith, Macklin Celebrini, and William Eklund, and this signing immediately improves this new core's supporting cast. This past season, Toffoli registered 33 goals and 22 assists for 55 points in 79 games with the New Jersey Devils and Winnipeg Jets. He has scored at least 20-30 goals every season for the past five seasons and has been a bit of a journeyman the past four years, having previously played for the Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, and Winnipeg Jets. In addition, Toffoli won the Stanley Cup with the LA Kings in  2014, and his new contract with the Sharks will last him through his age-36 season. In total, Toffoli has 260 goals and 261 assists for 521 points in 812 NHL games, along with 20 goals and 26 assists for 46 points in 93 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The second free agent addition made by the Sharks is Alexander Wennberg, signing him to a two-year deal carrying an average annual value of $5 million and a full no-trade clause in year one of the deal. Wennberg adds more depth and security at the center position for San Jose, especially in the instance that Logan Couture may not be ready to start the 2024-25 season, and is capable of being utilized in a top-six role and as a shutdown option. Last season with the Seattle Kraken and New York Rangers, Wennberg posted 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points in 79 regular season games, along with scoring the overtime game-winner for the Rangers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Florida Panthers to give them a 2-1 series lead. This marked his third consecutive year recording 30 points and fourth consecutive year reaching double-digit goals. In total, Wennberg has 91 goals and 244 assists for 335 points in 712 NHL games with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Seattle Kraken, and New York Rangers, along with eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 58 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

On top of the two most significant signings for the Sharks during this year's free agency period, Team Teal signed two AHL players in much more minor transactions, specifically defensemen Lucas Carlsson and Jimmy Schuldt to two-year and one-year, two-way contracts respectively. Carlsson recorded 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points in 52 AHL games with the Charlotte Checkers last season and represented the Checkers at the 2024 AHL All-Star Game. As for Schuldt, he registered five goals and 19 assists for 24 points in 68 AHL games for the Coachella Valley Firebirds last season. In addition, it has been reported that the recently-acquired Egor Afanasyev will not be joining the Sharks organization and will instead be signing a two-year deal with CSKA of the KHL, while the Sharks will still retain his NHL rights.

Lastly, the Sharks announced that their 2024-25 home opener will take place October 10 against the St. Louis Blues, with their full 2024-25 schedule set to release tomorrow. Other notable departures from the Sharks not previously mentioned on CPF Hockey include Devin Cooley and Jacob MacDonald, who have signed new contracts with the Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche respectively.

Overall, the Tyler Toffoli signing is a great one for the Sharks, and the Alex Wennberg signing is a bit of an overpayment, but both of these new additions are necessary for Team Teal to push them over the cap floor and establish more veteran presence to help their young core further develop into stars. Next up, the Sharks will hold their prospect development camp this week and host their annual prospect scrimmage on the 4th of July. By the end of this year's Sharks prospect development camp this week, I expect Macklin Celebrini to sign his ELC with the Sharks, so stay tuned to CPF Hockey for this developing story and any other Sharks updates this offseason.

Projecting the Sharks' 2024-25 Opening Night Roster

The Sharks are halfway through their preseason slate of games, and further cuts are being made to their training camp roster. As I am earin...
