After holding him out of yesterday’s win over the Sabres in Buffalo, the Sharks have dealt goalie Vitek Vanecek to the Florida Panthers this morning in exchange for forward Patrick Giles.
Vanecek has had an up-and-down season for the Sharks in 2024-25 and is a pending unrestricted free agent this summer. His season totals so far consist of a 3-10-3 record, 3.88 goals-against average, and a .882 save percentage in 18 games. He remains an NHL-caliber goalie that will provide much-needed depth in net for the Panthers behind Sergei Bobrovsky. On the other hand, Patrick Giles has no points in nine games with the Panthers this season, along with five goals and two assists for seven points in 39 AHL games with the Charlotte Checkers. In addition, Giles recorded 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points in 66 AHL games with Charlotte last season. Following this trade, the Sharks called up Georgi Romanov from the Barracuda to fill their no. 2 goalie spot on their roster since Yaroslav Askarov is currently injured.
Overall, I am okay with this trade, especially considering all the circumstances involved. Not too long ago, it seemed as if the Sharks might not have been able to move Vitek Vanecek due to the kind of season he is having in 2024-25, but I am glad the Sharks were able to get something in return for him and allow Askarov to eventually take on a greater role with San Jose in the NHL going forward. As for Patrick Giles, he is not a name that pops out at anyone, but he is a big, physical dude that can bolster depth on the Barracuda on their run to the Calder Cup Playoffs.
The Sharks are expected to make a few more trades between now and Friday's trade deadline, so stay tuned for more on those when they occur.
