The Sharks have made another trade today, acquiring defenseman Vincent Desharnais from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2028 fifth-round pick.
The 28-year-old Desharnais is a big dude and more of a defensive defenseman. He began the 2024-25 season with the Vancouver Canucks, recording three assists in 34 games before getting traded to Pittsburgh on February 1 as part of the deal that sent Marcus Pettersson to Vancouver. He then appeared in ten games with the Penguins, collecting no points and earning a +4 rating. In total, Vincent Desharnais has one goal and 18 assists for 19 points in 158 career NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Overall, like the Vanecek trade from earlier today, the latest trade involving Vincent Desharnais is nothing major. However, it is a decent depth move that should help revamp the Sharks blue line for the rest of this season and potentially the next few seasons. It is also necessary considering that the extent of Henry Thrun’s injury is unknown, and acquiring Desharnais could hint at a bigger deal involving a Sharks defenseman such as Jan Rutta, Mario Ferraro, or even Jake Walman in the next 36 or so hours leading up to the trade deadline. We will have to find out what else the Sharks front office is cooking up in the next day, so stay tuned.
