Sharks 2024-25 Game 63 Recap: Sharks 6, Sabres 2 (3/4/25)

The Sharks make it two consecutive wins on the road, sweeping the back-to-back set in Toronto and Buffalo with a dominant 6-2 win over the Sabres.

Early in the first period, Marc-Edouard Vlasic blocked a shot to become the NHL’s all-time leader in blocked shots with 2,165 total in his career. For additional context, the NHL began recording blocked shots during the 2005-06 season. Also throughout the first period, Macklin Celebrini had roughly three or four excellent scoring chances, but they all either hit the post, missed the net entirely, or were stopped by Ukko-Pekka Lukkonen.

The Sharks struck first in the second period on Timothy Liljegren’s sixth goal of the season, which may not have appeared to go in at first but had to be reviewed by the situation room to make sure, and it was clear as day after further review. Assisting on the opening goal were William Eklund and Jake Walman. Soon after, JJ Peterka scored to tie the game for the Sabres. Later in the second period, the Sharks regained their lead via Nico Sturm’s seventh goal of the season, assisted by Collin Graf and Klim Kostin.

Early in the third period, the Sharks extended their lead to two on William Eklund’s 13th goal of the season, assisted by Tyler Toffoli and Shakir Mukhamadullin. Roughly a few minutes later, the Sabres made it a one-goal game via Tage Thompson, while the Sharks regained their two-goal lead about a minute after on Macklin Celebrini’s 19th goal of the season, assisted by Shakir Mukhamadullin and Will Smith. Team Teal then proceeded to make it a three-goal game and gain their biggest lead of the night on another great shot by Willi Smith for his 11th of the season and third goal in the past four games, assisted by Fabian Zetterlund. Lastly, the Sharks put the exclamation point on this one, with Tyler Toffoli scoring an empty-netter for his 24th goal of the season with just under two minutes remaining to give the Sharks a four-goal lead, assisted by Jake Walman and Timothy Liljegren.

Alexander Georgiev was outstanding in his second straight start for Team Teal, registering 20 saves on 22 shots against. In addition, Klim Kostin was in the Sharks lineup against the Sabres in place of Carl Grundstrom, with the latter being a healthy scratch, while Vitek Vanecek was held out of this game due to trade-related reasons.

Overall, the Sharks carried their positive momentum from last night’s win in Toronto over to Buffalo and dominated a Sabres team at the bottom of the Eastern Conference in every facet of their game, which was simply impressive. San Jose will look to close out its current road trip on a high note on Thursday in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche at 6:30 pm PT, which will be nationally televised on ESPN.
