Sharks 2024-25 Game 62 Recap: Sharks 3, Maple Leafs 2 (SO) (3/3/25)

The Sharks generated a big third period and got the job done for their first shootout win of the season, an improbable 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs to end an eight-game winless skid.

The first period was scoreless, but it did feature a fight between Mario Ferraro and Philippe Myers after Myers laid a late hit on Barclay Goodrow near the boards. Ferraro was also handed a two-minute minor penalty for holding leading up to dropping the gloves as well. The Maple Leafs got on the board first in the second period on a power play deflection goal by John Tavares on the initial shot by Mitch Marner. Later in the second period, the Leafs extended their lead to two on another power play goal, this time from Matthew Knies on a mostly wide open net.

Early in the third period, the Sharks got back in this game and on the board on a marvelous shot by Jack Thompson for his third goal of the season, assisted by Alexander Wennberg and William Eklund. Later in the third period, Tyler Toffoli potted one at the doorstep for his 23rd goal of the season to tie the game at two, assisted by Alexander Wennberg and Shakir Mukhamadullin. This come-from-behind equalizer would eventually force overtime and a shootout, where the odds have been stacked against the Sharks all season long in this scenario. After the Sharks and Leafs’ each of their first two shootout attempts went for not, William Nylander scored for the Leafs, while the Sharks earned the victory on goals from Tyler Toffoli and Fabian Zetterlund in the skills competition.

Alexandar Georgiev earned the win for the Sharks in Toronto, recording 25 saves on 27 shots against. In addition, the Sharks have placed Henry Thrun on IR, recalled Jimmy Schuldt from the Barracuda, and placed Walker Duehr on waivers for the purpose of re-assigning him to the Barracuda.

Overall, this was a truly amazing, incredible, and massive win for Team Teal in Toronto to finally end its lengthy eight-game losing streak. This also happens to be Toronto’s first loss this season when leading after two periods of play, with the Leafs holding a 27-0-0 record when leading after two periods before tonight. This Sharks team has been in many of their recent games and given themselves a chance to win, but it was just a matter of time before they continue their current efforts and compete level and find themselves on top. Not only was this win improbable for San Jose, but it is a very enjoyable, necessary, and satisfying win for them most importantly. Next up, the Sharks travel to Buffalo to face the Sabres tomorrow at 4 pm PT.
