Sharks 2024-25 Game 61 Recap: Senators 5, Sharks 3 (3/1/25)

 The Sharks held a lead through the first two periods, but Ottawa rallied for four goals in the third period as the Senators would hand the Sharks their eighth straight defeat with a 5-3 victory. 

The Senators get this one going with a shorthanded goal by Shane Pinto in the first period. The Sharks responded early in the second period on Tyler Toffoli’s 22nd goal of the season, assisted by Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini, followed by Timothy Liljegren’s fifth goal of the season, assisted by Alexander Wennberg and Klim Kostin, to take a 2-1 lead. 

Early in the third period, the Senators fired off three unanswered goals from Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, and David Perron to gain a two-goal advantage and take complete control of this contest. The Sharks would get one back with about a minute and a half remaining in the game on the power play via Will Smith for his tenth goal of the season, assisted by William Eklund and Macklin Celebrini, only for the Senators to put this one away for good soon after on an empty-netter by Michael Amadio. 

Vitek Vanecek recorded 27 saves on 31 shots against on the losing end of this one. In addition, Henry Thrun was out of the Sharks lineup in Ottawa and is currently day-to-day with injury, with Jack Thompson replacing Thrun on the Sharks blue line. 

Team Teal continues to be unable to finish games despite outshooting the Sens 37-32 and two points each from Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. The Sharks’ next stop on their current seven-game roadie is Toronto against the Maple Leafs on Monday at 4:30 pm PT.
