Sharks 2025-26 Game 43 Recap: Sharks 4, Kings 3 (OT) (1/7/26)

Team Teal sweeps the first of four consecutive back-to-back sets by taking down the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 in overtime for their eighth straight OT victory.

The Sharks struck first early in the second period on a power play goal by Tyler Toffoli for his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Alex Wennberg and Macklin Celebrini.  This first goal extended Celebrini’s point streak to 12 games, as he further climbs up the leaderboards for the longest point streaks in Sharks franchise history and among teenagers in NHL history. It also added to Alex Wennberg’s fantastic week, as he recorded his 400th career point with the primary assist on this first goal. Later in the second period, the Kings responded on a goal from Alex Turcotte to tie things up at one.

Early in the third period, Adam Gaudette deflected a shot by Timothy Liljegren on the power play for his ninth goal of the season to regain the lead for the Sharks, with Jeff Skinner recording the secondary assist on this go-ahead goal. However, this second one-goal lead would not last long, as the Kings tied it again soon after via Kevin Fiala. Later in the third period, the Kings appeared to have taken their first lead of the night on a goal by Joel Edmundson. Fortunately for the Sharks, there was an official review by the league and the Edmundson goal was overturned because Edmundson gloved the puck into the net on that play. The Kings redeemed themselves by scoring their official go-ahead goal that would go to Alex Laferriere with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.

At that point, a lot of hope and momentum seemed to disappear for the Sharks, but Macklin Celebrini had a few more tricks up his sleeve. Macklin scored a sick highlight-reel goal for his 24th of the season to tie it at three with about a minute left in regulation, undressing Warren Foegele on his way to the net before scoring. Celebrini was not done yet, as he would set up William Eklund on a 2-on-1 drive to score the game-winning goal in overtime to drag the Sharks to victory kicking and screaming. This OT GWG was Eklund's 11th goal of the season, giving the Sharks the season series over their So Cal rivals and leapfrogging the Kings in the standings.

Yaroslav Askarov received the start in the second game of this back-to-back set and earned the win, compiling 23 saves on 26 shots against. In addition, Ty Dellandrea did not travel with the team to LA for tonight’s game and is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, with Adam Gaudette drawing back into the Sharks lineup as a result. Phillipp Kurashev was named to Team Switzerland’s Olympic roster ahead of the upcoming Milano Cortina Winter Olympics as well.

Another chapter of Macklin Celebrini's generational run this season has been written, as he recorded another three points to extend his point streak to 12 games and bring his point total to 67 on the campaign. This is an extremely impressive victory for the Sharks tonight in LA, as Macklin Celebrini almost singlehandedly put the team on his back to carry them over the top. Most of everyone on the Sharks deserve credit for this huge victory, but Macklin Celebrini was certainly the best player on the ice tonight. Team Teal has the next two days off before returning home for another set of back-to-back games starting on Saturday against the Dallas Stars at 1 pm PT.
