Team Teal opens its last homestand before the holiday break and earned its third consecutive win in a 6-3 victory over the Calgary Flames.
The Sharks began the new homestand like how they concluded their last road trip: John Klingberg from Macklin Celebrini. This opening goal was Klingberg’s eighth goal of the season and extended his point streak to five games. Team Teal followed that up soon after with Barclay Goodrow’s second goal of the season to extend their lead to two. Vincent Iorio and Zack Ostapchuk assisted on Goodrow’s second goal of the season for their first points as Sharks. Later in the first period, the Flames scored twice via Blake Coleman and Ryan Lomberg to tie it at two. With 18.4 seconds left in the opening period, the Sharks regained their lead on Barclay Goodrow’s third goal of the season and second goal of the night, assisted by Macklin Celebrini and Ty Dellandrea.
Scoring resumed early in the third period, when Macklin Celebrini got his 17th goal of the season on one for the highlight reels. It began with Macklin spinning around a Flames defender, leading to a breakaway burst of speed, Dustin Wolf getting a piece of the initial shot, and the puck going off of Macklin’s shin to find the back of the net. Collin Graf and Igor Chernyshov assisted on Macklin Celebrini’s 17th goal of the season, third point of the night, and 50th point of the season to get the Sharks’ lead back to two, the latter assist being Chernyshov's first NHL point. Later in the third period, the Sharks extended their lead to three on Tyler Toffoli’s tenth goal of the season and 300th goal of his NHL career, assisted by William Eklund and Alexander Wennberg. The Flames responded soon after via Nazem Kadri to get back within two. Lastly, the Sharks put the icing on the cake on this one with an empty-netter from Macklin Celebrini for his 18th goal of the season and second goal and fourth point of the night, assisted by Dmitry Orlov and Barclay Goodrow.
Yaroslav Askarov was solid in the crease tonight against the Flames, recording 27 saves on 30 shots against. In addition, Will Smith and Philipp Kurashev were placed on injured reserve. Both forwards will miss the at least the current homestand and have no precise timetable for their return. As a result, Igor Chernyshov and Ethan Cardwell were recalled from the Barracuda. It is worth noting that Chernyshov made his NHL debut tonight and has been one of the AHL’s top scorers this season before his call-up to the Sharks. Sam Dickinson served as a healthy scratch as well.
This was another great all-around win for the Sharks, and they took care of business against an opponent they are supposed to beat. Macklin Celebrini was the main hero leading the charge for the Sharks tonight with four points, and it was great to see Barclay Goodrow put together the sixth three-point performance of his career. On top of that, Tyler Toffoli had a great game, scoring a career milestone goal, and John Klingberg kept his hot streak alive. The Sharks host the Dallas Stars in their next game on Thursday at 7 pm PT.
