A slow start by the Sharks and a big third period by the Dallas Stars resulted in a 4-1 Stars victory to begin Team Teal’s five-game road trip.
The Stars struck first late in the opening period on a power play goal by Jason Robertson. This was not the start that the Sharks were looking for in this one, especially since they only managed just three shots on goal in the first period. At least this did not completely get away from them like their previous game against the Capitals.
The Sharks had a better second period than first period, tying the game at one on Collin Graf’s fourth goal of the season, assisted by Nick Leddy and Philipp Kurashev. Dallas took the lead in the third period on a goal by Sam Steel that barely just trickled into the net, followed by a goal from Mikko Rantanen not long after to extend their lead to two. About a minute later, Macklin Celebrini nearly made it a 3-2 game, but the Stars challenged it and that goal was overturned for offsides. Moments after, Miro Heiskanen found the empty net to make it 4-1 Stars.
Yaroslav Askarov recorded 20 saves on 23 shots against in the Sharks’ second consecutive defeat. In addition, Nick Leddy was inserted onto the Sharks blue line in place of Vincent Iorio, while Ryan Reaves was a scratch and Shakir Mukhamadullin sat for a second consecutive game. Jeff Skinner made his return to the Sharks lineup from injury, and Pavol Regenda was recently re-assigned to the Barracuda as well.
A slow start and a high-powered Stars offense placed the Sharks at a disadvantage against one of the top-performing teams in the NHL, but at least San Jose did not get completely blown out tonight like they did in their last home game against the Capitals. On a more positive note, Collin Graf performed well, and it was great to see Jeff Skinner back in action after his stint on the injured reserve. Next up, the Sharks travel to Raleigh to face the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday at 2 pm PT.
