Sharks 2025-26 Game 28 Recap: Capitals 7, Sharks 1 (12/3/25)

Team Teal was no match for the Washington Capitals in a 7-1 lopsided defeat.

This was the Sharks’ third alumni night of the season, as the Sharks brought out Patrick Marleau and Mike Ricci for a ceremonial puck drop prior to the start of this game. However, this game got out of hand early for Team Teal, as the Capitals scored four goals in the first period via Alex Ovechkin, Sonny Milano, Ryan Leonard, and Brandon Duhaime. These four goals by the Capitals chased Yaroslav Askarov out of the Sharks net and had Alex Nedeljkovic sub for him. Askarov finished his night with eight saves on 12 shots against and was unable to complete the first period. The second Caps goal by Milano was challenged by the Sharks for goalie interference, and the goal stood, resulting in a bench minor penalty for delay of game for San Jose. The last of these four Caps first-period goals by Duhaime was shorthanded.

Washington added two more goals in the second period via Alex Ovechkin on the power play early in the period and Dylan Strome late in the period to take a further commanding six-goal lead. Early in the third period, Ryan Leonard scored his second goal of the game to make it 7-0. Later in the final frame, the Sharks were able to avoid getting shut out after a shot by Dmitry Orlov went off of Charlie Lindgren and Pavol Regenda’s skate for Regenda’s second goal as a Shark. Adam Gaudette earned an assist on the Sharks’ lone goal of this contest by Regenda as well. This goal was challenged by the Capitals for goalie interference but thankfully it stood after further review.

Alex Nedeljkovic recorded 15 saves on 18 shots against in relief for Askarov. In addition, Vincent Iorio was inserted onto the Sharks blue line tonight in place of Shakir Mukhamadullin, and Michael Misa has been loaned to the Barracuda on a conditioning stint as he recovers from his injury.

Overall, the Capitals were absolutely rolling from the get-go, and the Sharks were unable to keep pace with them for the entire night. At least San Jose avoided getting shut out in this one. The Sharks are currently in a funk of alternating wins and losses (win one, lose one) in their past several games, and it appears that this specific trend may potentially continue for a bit longer. Team Teal embarks on a five-game road trip starting on Friday in Dallas against the Stars at 5 pm PT.
