The newest addition to the Sharks was made Thursday morning, with San Jose claiming defenseman Vincent Iorio off waivers from the Washington Capitals.
Vincent Iorio is a second-round pick of the Capitals from 2021 and has appeared in nine career NHL games with the Capitals during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, logging an assist. He has spent most of his pro career with the Hershey Bears in the AHL thus far, recording five goals, 15 assists, and 20 points in 67 games last season, setting AHL career-bests in goals, game-winning goals (2), and games played, and finishing third among Hershey blueliners in points. In total, Iorio has accumulated 11 goals, 45 assists, and 56 points in 190 regular-season AHL games, along with one goal, six assists, and seven points in 31 playoff games and two Calder Cup championships in 2022-23 and 2023-24.
In a corresponding move, the Sharks have placed Timothy Liljegren on the injured reserve, while John Klingberg is currently day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
Overall, I do not have any strong feelings about this latest waiver claim by the Sharks at this time due to my general unfamiliarity with Vincent Iorio prior to today’s news. However, Iorio has the potential to become a solid, serviceable depth defenseman for the Sharks in the long term, which I hope is the case here.
