Sharks training camp begins in a few days, and San Jose announced it has signed forward Oliver Wahlstrom to a professional tryout and AHL contract.
Wahlstrom was the no. 11 overall pick of the New York Islanders in 2018 and primarily spent last season with the Providence Bruins in the AHL, recording 12 goals in 26 regular season and playoff games. In total, he has accumulated 21 goals in 69 AHL games over parts of three seasons with the Bridgeport Islanders and Providence Bruins, along with 37 goals, 36 assists, and 73 points over parts of six seasons with the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins. His career-best so far has been 13 goals in 2021-22 with the Islanders.
Wahlstrom has an NHL-caliber shot and can provide solid depth on offense, but he has yet to find any consistency in the top hockey league in the world. If he does not crack the Sharks roster before the start of the season, Wahlstrom will certainly provide more scoring help to the Barracuda in the AHL, who could and will benefit from his services. Overall, I do not have any strong feelings about this latest addition to the Sharks organization, but I am totally cool with it and definitely see a scenario in which Oliver Wahlstrom sticks with the Barracuda and becomes one of the Sharks' AHL club's top scorers next season.
