Sharks 2024-25 Game 44 Recap: Utah HC 2, Sharks 1 (1/10/25)

It was a close, low-scoring game between the Sharks and Utah Hockey Club, but a late goal-ahead goal by Utah propels the latter to a 2-1 win in the Sharks-Utah season series finale.

The Sharks struck first in the first minute of this one on Fabian Zetterlund's 12th goal of the season, assisted by Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci. Utah responded early in the second period on a goal from Nick Schmaltz to even the game at one.

Utah went ahead near the beginning of the final frame via Clayton Keller, but this goal was challenged by the Sharks and overturned due to goalie interference. Nick Schmaltz made contact with Alexandar Georgiev in the crease, interfering with Georgiev’s ability to make a save on the supposed goal by Keller. However, with 1:32 remaining in regulation, Barrett Hayton scored the game-winner to put Utah ahead 2-1.

Alexandar Georgiev had a bounceback performance over his previous start on Tuesday but still couldn’t get the win, stopping 24 of 26 shots he faced. In addition, Jake Walman and Nikolai Kovalenko didn’t travel with the Sharks to Utah, while Ty Dellandrea drew back into the lineup tonight for Team Teal. On top of that, Klim Kostin had to exit the game early due to a lower-body injury.

Overall, Team Teal were in it, fought hard, and played okay until the end, but also had some things not go their way either, and that critical last goal by Utah was what ultimately decided this contest. The Sharks return home tomorrow to host the Minnesota Wild at 7 pm PT.
