It was a rather close match, but the Vegas Golden Knights hand the Sharks their first loss of the 2025 calendar year, holding on by a score of 4-2.
The Golden Knights got this one going by scoring twice in the first period via Mark Stone and Zach Whitecloud to grab an early 2-0 lead. The Sharks got on the board in the second period, when William Eklund went top corner for his eighth goal of the season, assisted by Collin Graf and Alexander Wennberg.
Vegas went back ahead by two early in the third period via Victor Olofsson. The Sharks made a further push later in the final frame, with Timothy Liljegren scoring his fourth goal of the season, assisted by William Eklund and Fabian Zetterlund, to get the Sharks within one once more. Unfortunately, this comeback effort by San Jose was thwarted, as former longtime Shark Tomas Hertl scored an empty-netter to put the Sharks up by two and put this game away for good.
Alexandar Georgiev was back in net for San Jose tonight against Vegas, compiling 38 saves on 41 shots against. In addition, Nico Sturm is day-to-day, while Shakir Mukhamadullin took the place of Marc-Eduoard Vlasic in the Sharks lineup, the latter of which was a healthy scratch.
This last game of the season series between the Sharks and Golden Knights was closer than the first two, but the end result unsurprisingly remained the same. The good news is that these two teams will not have to face each other again until next season. Next up, Team Teal hits the road to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Hockey Club for one last time this season on Friday at 6 pm PT.
