Sharks Acquire Kiefer Sherwood from Canucks

The Sharks have made a significant splash in the trade market ahead of their game this afternoon against the Panthers in South Florida. They have acquired forward Kiefer Sherwood from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defenseman Cole Clayton, a 2026 second-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick.

A pending UFA this offseason, Kiefer Sherwood has been one of the Canucks’ best players this season. In 44 games for Vancouver this season, Sherwood recorded 17 goals, six assists, and 23 points, leading the Canucks in goals and ranking third on the team in points. He is also second in the NHL in hits with 210 and has collected two separate hat tricks and three-game point streaks this season as well. His two hat tricks this season were scored on October 30, 2025 at the St. Louis Blues and December 19, 2025 at the New York Islanders, while his season-high three-game point streaks were recorded in November. Sherwood currently has three consecutive ten-goal seasons and is two goals shy of his career best of 19 from last season.

Over the course of his NHL career so far, Kiefer Sherwood has compiled 60 goals, 61 assists, and 121 points in 309 NHL games with the Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, and Vancouver Canucks, along with a goal and an assist in eight Stanley Cup Playoff games.

On the other hand, Cole Clayton has two goals, three assists, and five points in 33 games for the Barracuda in the AHL this season, and will report to the Canucks' AHL affiliate in Abbotsford.

In other news, Vincent Desharnais has been activated from the injured reserve, while Nick Leddy was placed on waivers, cleared waivers, and re-assigned to the Barracuda in the AHL.

Overall, this is a great trade for the Sharks, as Kiefer Sherwood will bring a much-needed boost to their offense minus Macklin Celebrini and an increased physical presence to this team. It also signals that the Sharks are actively making a push towards making the playoffs this season, as they currently sit in the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference with 51 points. It has yet to be determined when Kiefer Sherwood will make his Sharks debut since he is on IR at the time of this deal, but I am certainly looking forward to seeing how he fits into this Sharks team, what kind of impact he makes, and if he sticks around with them past this season.
