A late comeback effort by the Sharks fueled them to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
During the middle of the opening period, Ty Dellandrea was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked from behind by Morgan Reilly, and that penalty shot resulted in a save by Dennis Hildeby. Soon after, the Maple Leafs scored the first goal of the game via Dakota Joshua.
Late in the second period, the Maple Leafs went ahead by two on a power play goal by Auston Matthews. Soon after, the Sharks got on the board on Dmitry Orlov’s first goal in teal, assisted by John Klingberg and Alexander Wennberg. This snaps a 39-game goal drought dating back to March for Orlov.
Fast forward to the third period, when the Sharks initially tied the game at two on a goal from Ryan Reaves, only for it to be challenged by the Leafs and overturned due to Adam Gaudette entering the zone before the puck did on that play. With just under one and a half minutes left in regulation, John Klingberg scored his fifth goal of the season on one heck of a shot from the point to tie the game at two and force bonus hockey. Macklin Celebrini and Adam Gaudette assisted on the equalizer by Klingberg. San Jose completes their comeback in overtime on a 2-on-1 scoring chance, where Alexander Wennberg buried it on the rebound for his seventh goal of the season, assisted by William Eklund, to get the Sharks back in the win column. Right after, the officials reviewed it for offside, and fortunately for the Sharks, the OT game-winner by Wennberg remained a good goal.
Alex Nedeljkovic was fantastic for Team Teal in Toronto, recording 28 saves on 30 shots against. In addition, Yaroslav Askarov has returned from illness and served as the backup goalie tonight, and Shakir Mukhamadullin is back on the Sharks blue line after sitting out the past four games. It is worth noting that Henry Thrun not only played in his first game in the big leagues this season, but made his Maple Leafs debut against his former team as well.
While the Maple Leafs led for most of this contest, and some scoring chances did not go the Sharks’ way, Team Teal remained resilient and created their own luck through a complete team effort to earn the comeback win in overtime. With this OT victory, the Sharks are now tied with a few other teams for the second-most overtime and shootout wins in the NHL this season with seven. They also move into the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference for the time being. Overall, this is a huge and incredible win for the Sharks, as they continue to have the Maple Leafs’ number in recent years. San Jose closes out one of its longest road trips of the year on Saturday in Pittsburgh against the Penguins at 12 pm PT.
