San Jose got off to an amazing start, dominated, and never looked back, as they blew out the Seattle Kraken 6-1 to earn their third win in four contests.
The Sharks got off to a incredibly quick start to this one, when Macklin Celebrini scored his eighth goal of the season to jump out to a 1-0 lead, assisted by Tyler Toffoli and John Klingberg. Late in the opening period, the Kraken tied the game on Ryan Winterton’s first NHL goal, while the Sharks regained their lead a few minutes after on Ethan Cardwell’s first goal of the season, assisted by Alex Wennberg and Jeff Skinner.
San Jose extended its lead to two past the halfway point of the second period on John Klingberg’s second goal of the season and its first power play goal in some time, assisted by Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini. The Sharks then added three unanswered goals within the first four minutes of the third period. The first of these three was scored by Will Smith for his fifth goal of the season that went off two Kraken defenders before finding the back of the net, assisted by Mario Ferraro and Macklin Celebrini. Celebrini’s second assist and third point of the night now ties him with Connor McDavid atop the NHL league lead in points with 21 each. Next, a shorthanded breakaway attempt by Collin Graf set up Ty Dellandrea to score his first goal of the season to make it 5-1. Lastly, a cross-ice pass by Shakir Mukhamadullin set up Tyler Toffoli right as he was exiting the penalty box on another breakaway to score his fifth goal of the season to bust this game wide open.
Yaroslav Askarov had another extraordinary performance in net for Team Teal, compiling 28 saves on 29 shots against. In addition, Adam Gaudette is back in the Sharks lineup from injury, while Michael Misa and William Eklund were both out due to injury.
Overall, this has been the Sharks’ most complete victory so far this season. All aspects of the Sharks have improved significantly since the start of the season, especially their defense and goaltending, and so has my confidence in this team in most scenarios. Team Teal returns home for their next two games, starting on Friday against the Winnipeg Jets at 7 pm PT.
