The Sharks and Flyers have made a trade the day after the conclusion of the preseason. San Jose sends forward Carl Grundstrom and defenseman Artem Guryev to the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman Ryan Ellis’ contract and a sixth-round selection in 2026.
Ryan Ellis has not played in the NHL since 2021 and has been medically retired due to injury. He has amassed 76 goals and 199 assists for 275 points in 566 games over 11 seasons with the Nashville Predators and Philadelphia Flyers. His contract has two years remaining at an average annual value of $6.25 million.
Last season with the Sharks, Carl Grundstrom recorded three goals, six assists, and nine points in 56 games. As for Artem Guryev, he spent last season with the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL, recording two goals, three assists, and five points.
In other news, Pavol Regenda has been placed on waivers by the Sharks, and Egor Afanasyev will begin this regular season on the injured reserve.
This trade was made for a few reasons. The Sharks needed to make roster cuts before the start of the regular season, and Carl Grundstrom has not been productive this preseason for the Sharks. In addition, taking on another contract of a medically-retired player will still keep the Sharks above the salary cap floor if they need to move more contracts at any point this season. Overall, I am totally fine with this trade for both the Sharks and Flyers.
