The Sharks’ offense went cold as they ran into a hot Blue Jackets team in Columbus, dropping this contest by a score of 4-1.
The Blue Jackets grabbed a 2-0 lead through the first period of play on goals by Adam Fantilli and Kent Johnson. Columbus extended its lead to three via James Van Riemsdyk early in the second period. The Sharks’ only goal of the game occurred at around the seven-and-a-half minute mark of the third period, when Tyler Toffoli scored his 17th goal of the season. Macklin Celebrini registered the lone assist on the Sharks’ lone goal of the game. Columbus wasn’t done yet, as James Van Riemsdyk scored his second goal of the game on an empty-netter with about two minutes remaining to go back up by three.
Alexandar Georgiev made his second consecutive start in net for Team Teal, recording 30 saves on 33 shots against. In addition, this is a significant milestone for Marc-Eduoard Vlasic, as he skated in his 1,300th NHL game in Columbus tonight, all of which were with the Sharks.
Overall, after the Sharks had an incredible performance in their previous game in Detroit on Tuesday, they went back to their old ways and didn’t have much to show for against the Blue Jackets in Columbus, which shouldn’t be all that surprising. San Jose’s next stop on its current five-game road trip is in New York to face the Islanders on Saturday at 4:30 pm PT.
