Sharks 2021-22 Game 48 Recap: Canucks 5, Sharks 4 (OT) (2/17/22)

The Sharks come back in the third period and tie it at the last second, but still find a way to lose to the Vancouver Canucks 5-4 in overtime. Although the Sharks earned a point in this game, they have now dropped their last five games.

The Sharks showed greater effort in Thursday’s game against the Canucks, especially in the second and third periods, but it wasn’t enough. San Jose had a rough first period, allowing the first two goals of the game to Brock Boeser and Quinn Hughes while only putting up four shots on goal.

The second and third periods made up for the pathetic first period. The Sharks finally broke their scoring drought early in the second period on Logan Couture's spin-o-rama wrister. Although Matt Nieto and Noah Gregor were credited with the assists on the Sharks' first goal of the game, Tyler Myers unknowingly deflected Logan Couture's initial shot into his own net. The Canucks regained their two-goal lead later in the middle frame via Juho Lammikko. Team Teal got back within one a few minutes later on Timo Meier's first goal of the game on the power play.

With less than a minute into the third period, Timo Meier scores his second goal of the game on the same power play to tie the game at three. Tomas Hertl and and Alexander Barabanov assisted on both Timo Time goals. In addition, both Timo Meier goals in this game were absolutely sniped and beautiful. Later in the third, the Canucks go ahead 4-3 via Conor Garland fooling James Reimer and going top shelf. At the last second, the Sharks pulled a miracle out of themselves and scored to tie the game at four and send it to overtime, guaranteeing at least one point in the standings. The last-second goal was scored by Alexander Barabanov, causing the Canucks' defense and Thatcher Demko to freeze up in the process. Assisting on the miraculous last-second goal were Timo Meier and Brent Burns.

However, overtime didn't go so well for the Sharks, as J.T. Miller put one away to seal the deal for the Canucks on a delayed penalty against San Jose. What would've improved the Sharks' chances in overtime is if Bob Boughner didn't put Noah Gregor out on the ice during overtime. I also had a gut feeling that with the way things have been going lately for the Sharks, the Canucks would find a way to win, and that hurt.

Although James Reimer gave up five goals to Vancouver, he shouldn't be the one to blame for the OT loss as he put up 22 saves and kept the Sharks in this game.

In other news, Rudolfs Balcers was out for this game after blocking a shot in the Sharks' previous game on Monday against the Oilers. Radim Simek was a healthy scratch in favor of Ryan Merkley on defense, and Adin Hill has been shut down for a few days with a lower-body injury.

The Sharks face the Vegas Golden Knights for the first time this season in their next game on Sunday at 5 pm PT.
