It was a close and competitive battle, but the Sharks’ home winning streak comes to an end as they lose 3-2 to the Ottawa Senators.
Team Teal got off to a blistering start about a minute and a half into this one on an incredible feed by Macklin Celebrini setting up Will Smith to score. However, the Senators challenged that opening goal for offsides and it was quickly overturned by the officials. The Senators officially scored the first goal of the game later in the opening period on a power play goal by Dylan Cozens. A few minutes after, the Sharks responded with their own power play goal to tie this game at one via John Klingberg’s third goal of the season from Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith.
Early in the second period, the Sharks went ahead on a goal credited to Barclay Goodrow for his first of the season, assisted by Alexander Wennberg and Mario Ferraro. Not long after, Ryan Reaves and Hayden Hodgson dropped the gloves and traded blows. This was mainly in response to Hodgson charging Mario Ferraro into the boards in the first period that resulted in Ferraro being slow to get up and having to head to the dressing room for a bit before eventually returning to the Sharks bench. Late in the second period, Ottawa tied the game at two via Fabian Zetterlund in his first game as a Senator against his former team. Late in the third period, a 2-on-0 breakaway of Nick Cousins and Drake Batherson by the Senators, along with defensive miscues by the Sharks resulted in Tim Stutzle poking in the go-ahead goal for Ottawa.
Alex Nedeljkovic received the start in the first game of this weekend back-to-back set, recording 24 saves on 27 shots against. The only other lineup change for the Sharks in tonight's game was Shakir Mukhamadullin in place of Sam Dickinson on the blue line, with the latter having a development day.
It was an emotional roller coaster and another close contest for the boys in teal that they had a solid chance of winning, but the Sharks made some costly mistakes and could not buy an extra goal, resulting in their defeat to the Senators. The Sharks are back in action tomorrow night, hosting the Boston Bruins at 5 pm PT. This next Sharks game will be my fourth that I will be attending this season, so be on the lookout for my personal experience post from that game coming very soon.
