Sharks News & Notes (8/18/21)

Here are a few recent headlines that are making waves surrounding the Sharks and the NHL as a whole:

  • The NHL has agreed to place ads on jerseys starting in the 2022-23 season. The sponsor patch can't be bigger than 3.5 x 3 inches, and this was voted unanimously by the NHL Board of Governors. I expect that these advertisements will consist of small patches on one of the top corners of the jersey above the team logo and below the shoulders. This is similar to the advertisements that are currently placed on NBA jerseys. I am not a huge fan of this move, but I understand why it was done and that this would eventually happen since there were helmet ads beginning last season. In addition, the league and team owners are always looking for ways to increase profits and bring in more revenue. As long as NHL jerseys aren't plastered with ads like those in the European leagues, this should be okay with me.
  • The Sharks signed their 2021 seventh overall pick William Eklund to a three-year standard entry level contract in time for development camp. Eklund also stated that he was 'open' to playing in the AHL for the Barracuda if he doesn't make the Sharks' roster to start the regular season.
  • Sharks development camp is currently underway, and their Prospect Scrimmage is set to be held this Thursday at 7 pm PT. Although fans will not be allowed to attend the Prospect Scrimmage at SAP Center due to a Santa Clara County public health order, the Sharks will host a free livestream of the event on their website and social media platforms where fans can watch the Sharks' prospects in action.
